Cultural Note — Shopping in the Netherlands

The Dutch love their markt (outdoor market) — almost every Dutch town has a weekly market selling fresh produce, flowers, cheese and clothing. The most famous is the Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam. Dutch supermarkets include Albert Heijn (the biggest), Jumbo and Lidl. Remember: in the Netherlands, shops are often closed on Sunday morning, and many smaller shops close early. The Dutch tend to pay by PIN (debit card) — cash is becoming less common!

Dutch prices use a comma (not a full stop) for decimals:

€2,50 = twee euro vijftig
€0,75 = vijfenzeventig cent
€14,99 = veertien euro negenennegentig

Ask the price: Hoeveel kost dit? = How much does this cost?
