The Dutch 's in time expressions (like 's ochtends) is a contraction of des (genitive). Pronounce it softly like an "s" attached to the next word: sochtends.

๐Ÿ“ Grammar: Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun (zich) that refers back to the subject. They are very common when talking about daily routines.

๐Ÿ”„ Reflexive Pronouns — Reflexieve voornaamwoorden

In Dutch, the reflexive pronoun changes based on the subject:

SubjectReflexive PronounExampleTranslation
ikme / mijIk was meI wash myself
jij / jejeJij wast jeYou wash yourself
uzich / uU wast zichYou wash yourself (formal)
hij / zijzichHij wast zichHe washes himself
wij / weonsWij wassen onsWe wash ourselves
julliejeJullie wassen jeYou wash yourselves
zij (pl.)zichZij wassen zichThey wash themselves
⚠️ Key rule: The reflexive pronoun comes right after the conjugated verb in a main clause: Ik kleed me aan.

๐Ÿ”€ Separable Reflexive Verbs

Many daily routine verbs are both reflexive AND separable. The prefix goes to the end:

InfinitiveConjugatedTranslation
zich aankledenIk kleed me aanI get dressed
zich uitkledenZij kleedt zich uitShe gets undressed
zich voorbereidenWij bereiden ons voorWe prepare ourselves
๐Ÿ’ก Word order: Subject + verb stem + reflexive pronoun + ... + separable prefix.
Think of it as the verb "splitting" with the reflexive pronoun tucked in the middle.

⏰ Separable Verbs in Daily Routine (Non-reflexive)

These common daily verbs are separable but NOT reflexive:

InfinitiveConjugatedTranslation
opstaanIk sta om 7 uur opI get up at 7 o'clock
afwassenHij wast de borden afHe washes the dishes
opruimenWij ruimen de kamer opWe tidy up the room
Ik sta elke dag om half zeven op en dan douche ik me.
I get up every day at half past six and then I shower.
op|staan = separable verb → sta...op | zich douchen = reflexive → douche...me
Na het ontbijt kleedt zij zich aan en haast ze zich naar het werk.
After breakfast she gets dressed and hurries to work.
zich aankleden → kleedt...zich...aan | zich haasten → haast...ze...zich

๐Ÿ’ฌ Dialogue: A Typical Morning

Read this conversation between two colleagues, Sanne and Lars, talking about their morning routines.

๐ŸŽญ Sanne & Lars — Op kantoor (At the office)
S
Goedemorgen Lars! Je ziet er moe uit. Hoe laat ben je opgestaan?
Good morning Lars! You look tired. What time did you get up?
L
Om half zes! Ik moest me haasten omdat ik me had verslapen.
At half past five! I had to hurry because I had overslept.
S
Oh nee! Heb je nog kunnen ontbijten?
Oh no! Were you still able to have breakfast?
L
Nauwelijks. Ik heb me snel gedoucht, me aangekleed en een boterham in de auto gegeten.
Barely. I quickly showered, got dressed, and ate a sandwich in the car.
S
Dat klinkt stressvol! Ik sta altijd om zes uur op. Eerst douche ik me, daarna kleed ik me rustig aan.
That sounds stressful! I always get up at six o'clock. First I shower, then I calmly get dressed.
L
En dan? Heb je tijd voor een goed ontbijt?
And then? Do you have time for a good breakfast?
S
Ja, ik ontbijt altijd met mijn gezin. Vervolgens poets ik mijn tanden, pak ik mijn tas in en vertrek ik om half acht.
Yes, I always have breakfast with my family. Then I brush my teeth, pack my bag, and leave at half past seven.
L
Ik moet ook beter plannen. Vanavond ga ik vroeg naar bed!
I need to plan better too. Tonight I'm going to bed early!
๐Ÿ” Language Spotlight

Notice how separable verbs work in the perfect tense: the prefix attaches to the past participle → op + gestaan = opgestaan, aan + gekleed = aangekleed. Also note reflexive pronouns in the perfect tense: Ik heb me gedoucht.
