๐Ÿ“ Grammar: Comparatives & Superlatives

Learn how to compare things in Dutch — bigger, smaller, the cheapest, the most expensive.

๐Ÿ“Š Comparatives — De vergrotende trap

To form the comparative in Dutch, add -er to the adjective. Use dan (than) for comparisons:

AdjectiveComparativeExampleTranslation
grootgroterDit huis is groter dan dat huis. This house is bigger than that house.
kleinkleinerMijn tas is kleiner dan jouw tas.My bag is smaller than your bag.
goedkoopgoedkoperDe markt is goedkoper dan de winkel. The market is cheaper than the store.
duurduurderDit shirt is duurder dan dat shirt. This shirt is more expensive than that shirt.
mooimooierDeze jurk is mooier dan die jurk. This dress is prettier than that dress.
lekkerlekkerderDit brood is lekkerder dan dat brood. This bread is tastier than that bread.
⚠️ Spelling rule: If the adjective ends in -r, add -der instead of -er: duur → duurder, lekker → lekkerder.

๐Ÿ† Superlatives — De overtreffende trap

To form the superlative, add -st to the adjective. Use het before the superlative:

AdjectiveSuperlativeExampleTranslation
groothet grootst(e)Dit is het grootste huis. This is the biggest house.
kleinhet kleinst(e)Dit is de kleinste maat. This is the smallest size.
goedkoophet goedkoopst(e)Dit is de goedkoopste winkel. This is the cheapest store.
duurhet duurst(e)Dit is het duurste restaurant. This is the most expensive restaurant.
mooihet mooist(e)Dit is de mooiste jurk. This is the prettiest dress.
๐Ÿ’ก When to add -e: Add -e when the superlative comes before a noun: het grootste huis. Drop the -e when it stands alone: dit huis is het grootst.
