Cultural Note — Dutch Housing
The Netherlands is famous for its iconic grachtenpanden (canal houses) — tall, narrow townhouses along the canals of Amsterdam, built since the 17th century. Because land is scarce, Dutch homes tend to be small and efficiently used. Many Dutch people live in rijtjeshuizen (terraced houses). Renting is very common — about 44% of Dutch people rent. The typical Dutch home has large windows with no curtains — the Dutch like to show they have nothing to hide!
๐ Grammar: Location prepositions
Prepositions tell us WHERE something is. In Dutch, the most common ones are:
in = in · op = on · onder = under
naast = next to · achter = behind · voor = in front of
tussen = between · boven = above · links van = to the left of
These come BEFORE the noun: De kat zit op de bank. (The cat sits on the sofa.)
in de keuken.
op de tafel.
onder het bed.
naast de bank.
achter de deur.
voor het raam.
tussen de stoelen.
boven het bed.
links van de deur.
rechts van de deur.
